Since lockdown began, the hole of the municipality of San Roque and Sotogrande has been very diligent and responsible with regards to maintaining social distancing and Covid-19 protocol.

As a result the municipality of San Roque has only had 26 cases, the last new case was reported in June.

If you are planning to visit Sotogrande, please continue to do so. Contrary to what you may hear on the news, the Costa del Sol is still a safe place to visit.

Protocol:

1. Holmes will be closing the office from Monday 16^th March morning for a minimum of 15 days.
2. Our staff will work remotely from home via email, mobile phones and the use of software such as “Any Desk” or “Teamviewer”.

4. We will take applicants to view properties:
   1. Asking them to respect that we are employing social distancing measures.

   4. Applicants should travel in their own vehicle.
   5. Remind applicants that they will be visiting other people’s homes, so please be respectful and try not to touch anything.
   6. We should try to open the house in advance including all internal doors to minimize the need to touch anything.
5. NO new properties will be listed whilst owners or tenants are at present occupying the property. If the owners are not occupying the property at the moment and access is arranged via local key holder, then there is no reason not to visit the property to value or list it.
6.  Should an applicant have arrived from a high risk area with high levels of community transmission within the last 15 day we will ask that they  inform us. If they have then wee will delay and tours until they have been out of that area for 15 days.

The Gecko Tour Thurs/Fri, 6/7 February 2020
La Cañada Golf Club is hosting the Gecko Tour this year, a highly competitive tournament taking place across southern Spain’s top golf courses. Elite amateurs and professional players descend here from across Europe and worldwide, including Russia, the USA and Scandinavia during the winter months. Fees are 150€.

The San Roque municipality is rich with excellent golf courses so if you’d like to venture further you could also check out the facilities at the Real Club de Sotogrande and Valderrama, which famously hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997.

The hallowed grounds of this most famous of Spanish golf club have, of course, played host to many other major competitions, including the European Tour, Challenge Tour and other international events – as well as the legendary 1997 Ryder Cup!

An annual highlight, however, is the Valderrama Masters, this year in its 19^th consecutive edition and one of the top events within Spanish golf. Not surprisingly, then, it is proudly hosted by one of the country’s all-time greats, Sergio García.

A move to June
After years of discussions, the European Golf Circuit finally approved changing the schedule of the tournament from the previous October slot. As of 2019, the Valderrama Masters will now be held between the 26^th and 30^th of June.

Though the weather is generally very clement in this sunny part of Europe, players and especially spectators will be pleased to experience this classic Sotogrande competition in the breezy sunshine of June instead of late autumn.

In addition, it’s also a less congestion period free of overlap with other major tournaments, leaving more star players free to compete. National heroes such as Rafa Cabrera Bello and Jon Rahm have already confirmed their presence in this event.

June is also considered one of the perfect months for golf tourism in Andalucía, so it´s expected that more viewers will come to enjoy the four days of pure golf. Already becoming a collectible series, the postcards offer a unique look at Sotogrande’s evolution, including the many highlights experienced since our founding in 1979. One outstanding year was 1982, when Holmes co-founder, Ian Bateman, brought the Scottish national football team playing in the ’82 world cup to Sotogrande, where they could train and focus in a peaceful, beautiful setting.

 1979 saw the founding of Holmes in Sotogrande, which opened its offices in the clubhouse of the ‘Nuevo Club de Golf Sotogrande’, as Valderrama was known back then. Real Madrid added glamour to the local scene by staying in Sotogrande, and the following year the Octógono Beach Club was opened. In 1981 the Bateman family moved to Sotogrande fulltime and Ian was appointed hotels and catering director to run The Tenis and Golf Bungalow hotels, the Club de Playa and the restaurants at the two golf clubs.

Not much later, Holmes sponsored its first major event, the International Week of Golf, a four-day men’s and women’s tournament played across Sotogrande and culminating with the Copa de Jerez. Travel agencies specialising in golf began to promote Sotogrande to the international market, with accommodation provided by Holmes.

These are just some of the fantastic memories we have of our time living, working and raising a family here. Holmes has become a household name in Sotogrande real estate, but also an integral part of the local community – both as a property company that people have come to rely on for its local expertise and ethical business style, and as individuals whose children have grown up here and attended the local schools.

Stay in Sotogrande for Christmas and you’ll be in for a magical time. There are plenty of fellow expats about as well as locals spending Christmas in a unique way that’s subtly different from ‘back home’.

In Sotogrande, true to Spanish tradition, you’ll find Beléns (nativity scenes) gracing popular spots such as shops, restaurants and churches. Take a careful look and amongst the characters on the nativity scene you will find a gnome-like figure called a Caganer (a pooper doing business that would ordinarily be confined to the toilet) hiding in the background, often taking the form of someone in the public eye.
