Sotogrande’s courses get ready for the golf season

As the polo season winds up the golf season begins in earnest. Temperatures drop slightly to a level that is perfect for the pursuit of the noble sport, and the courses are readied for the arrival of new players from across Europe. As one of the finest golf destinations on the continent, Sotogrande proudly boasts five golf clubs that shine on the Costa del Sol and hold their own with the best internationally.

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, in what was his first project in mainland Europe, this is the original golf club in Sotogrande, and an integral part of its fabric. A grand American style course on the edge of the Mediterranean, the 18-hole par-72 course follows a gently undulating path that challenges in good measure in what the authoritative Pocket Guide to Golf Courses calls “The best Costa del Sol design.” For more information please visit the clubs website.

La Reserva de Sotogrande

Also highly rated, this course has built up its reputation since opening in 2003. The 18-hole par-72 course of La Reserva also sweeps gently through the countryside, encountering trees, water features and fine bunkers en route. Cabell Robinson did himself proud with what the experts describe as one of the finest courses in Southern Spain. For more information please visit the clubs website.

The San Roque Club

Divided into two 18-hole courses, known simply as the old (1990) and new (2003) courses, The San Roque Club has very quickly established itself as a well-respected and popular golf club with a host of additional luxury services. Experts prefer the newer course designed by Perry Dye and the late great Seve Ballesteros, who succeeded in creating a beautifully landscaped course with dramatic touches. Almenara

Attached to the luxury Almenara Golf-Hotel & Spa, this 27-hole course is noted for its scenic beauty and setting in a tranquil location on the northwestern inland part of Sotogrande. Opened in 1998 it features lovely mounding and bunkering, as well as interesting water features that keep the challenge alive. For more information please visit the clubs website.

  La Cañada

Another course originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, La Cañada was inaugurated in 1982 as a nine-hole course to which another nine were added in 2002. A blend of two courses created by two different designers, it seems the older section still stands out thanks to a superior setting, yet this is a course with a particularly challenging conclusion that really makes you earn your post-game refreshment. For more information please visit the clubs website.
